Winter Colour Trends That Come Naturally.
Wondering how you can flirt with this season's A/W colours without following a trend? Professional Makeup Artist Amy Hughes from The Eco Makeup Bar is busting the myth about what’s trending. Get the inside scoop on how to do winter makeup but make it natural.
Choose Intuitively
Stay true to your natural self and look to your own colouring for inspiration for your winter palette- conveniently this can also inform your wardrobe and makeup choices, isn't that serendipitous? Look inwards and think about your natural colour preferences. If you do need a little help there’s a few easy makeup artist tricks that we use to put our finger on your colour crushes.
Do you wear silver or gold jewellery?
As a general rule people that choose silver jewellery and a cooler hair tone prefer a cooler palette- and gone are the days of that meaning silver! Think champagnes, soft pinks, cool to mid tones browns, chocolates, plums and stone. You can play with all of these colours in your makeup. Warmer tones, olive skins and sun kissed babes tend to opt for gold/rose gold and are seduced by the peachy, warmer tones which can still include pinks, warm coppery tones, burnished reds, olive and ochre. If you flit between the two, there's a good chance you are a more neutral undertone so congratulations you get to choose.
GOLDEN RULE: Don’t get stuck on if you are cool, warm or neutral- go for what makes you feel good and how you like to see yourself. There’s always ways to bend ‘the rules’ in makeup.
The look that suits everyone.
If you feel like it’s too much pressure to choose your own colour palette go monochromatic. This fail-safe tip couldn’t be easier- choose one colour and repeat throughout your makeup. Simplify the process by choosing one neutral tone that ties in with your natural colouring and note that it doesn’t have to be brown. Monochromatic looks can be pinks, peachy, reds and oranges, pastels as well as classic neutrals we all know and love. Luckily with natural makeup you can often use your products in multi use ways- making it so easy to repeat your colour theme through cheeks, lips and eyes. Try the Carrot colour pot for a quick monochromatic look that can even be applied with fingers. My favourites are ‘Harmony’- the perfect pinky nude and ‘Healthy’ a warm caramel peach.
GOLDEN RULE: Spending more time blending is key for keeping the look soft, romantic and seamless.
Mixed Metallics.
Gold is back this season and an easy-to-wear metallic all year round. Metallics are always on trend for winter and give you a chance to experiment by mixing up your favourite burnished, bronzed and golden tones. Bonus- this doesn’t have to be kept to eye makeup. Try repeating your metallics throughout the face for a seamless look. The vanilla highlighter in Sun Halo is the perfect golden tone for high on the cheekbones, inner corner of the eye and patted into lips. If you are more of an eye makeup lover The Chamomile Eyeshadow Palettes are a good mix of mattes, metallics and shimmers that will make this look easy to achieve.
GOLDEN RULE- use a mix of matte textures to ground your metallics, for example a shimmery metallic can look great paired with a soft matte bronzer through the crease.
Add a Colour pop
Always an easy way to change up your makeup when the seasons change. Winter makeup loves aubergines, plums, coppers and deep earthy tones so experiment with a coloured liner or deeper lip. Look for inspiration from nature, work out what you’d love to integrate into your makeup and make it your own personal winter makeup trend. Now is a great time to press a pretty plum stain such as the carrot colour pot in ‘holy’ into your cheeks and lips. Add a deeper liner to add some drama to the eyes. My favourites? The jojoba eye pencil in bronze for blue eyes, forest for brown eyes and agate or copper for green and hazel. Another fun trick is change up your mascara- try brown to add to your tonal look or mauve for head turning change up.
GOLDEN RULE- there are no rules! If it feels right go for it because it is true to you. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to your personal style. This is makeup is to make you feel good.
